This auto-campground opened in 2005 on the Shiretoko Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It enjoys a great location — Mt. Rausu rises to the northeast, and on clear days you can even see Kunashiri Island. As the campground closest to the Shiretoko World Heritage area, it’s a great base for enjoying the outdoors amid magnificent nature. Camping here is very affordable, making it ideal for family trips. In addition to the auto sites there are also free tent sites, adding to the variety on offer, and with no walls or barriers anywhere, nothing blocks the view — at night you can enjoy a starry sky unlike anything you’ve seen before. Dedicated RV parking spaces are provided, and the cooking area is well equipped and spacious. Each site is generously sized, so you have plenty of room to relax. A town-run park golf course nearby is another option for enjoying time with family or friends. The nearest supermarket is about 10 km away, so it’s best to shop for supplies in advance. Beyond the campground, Rausu Town has plenty of attractions for nature lovers: Mt. Rausu and Lake Rausu for hiking and trekking, the ethereal, emerald-glowing luminous moss of Mackaus Cave, and the powerful Kumakoshi Falls on the way to Shiretoko Pass. It’s also worth visiting Aidomari, the “end of the road” spot unique to Hokkaido — true to Rausu’s reputation as the end of the earth, there is no public road beyond this point. It makes a memorable stop.
